Solidarity Campaign: A Million Metres for Le Phare
Last Update: July 06, 2025
The Million-Metre Campaign
The NAA is excited to announce that it intends to support Le Phare (The Lighthouse) during the 2025 season. Located downtown, Le Phare is the first and most important palliative care home specifically for children in Québec. Since 1999, the centre offers palliative care-related services and support for children and their families—all free of charge.
To support their cause, the NAA has agreed to organize a season-long awareness and solidarity campaign, with the objective to improve the visibility and outreach of the organization in the West Island.
The Pitch / Idea
Our objective is to have the NAA and the West Island Community swim a collective one million metres (or 40,000 laps) over the summer in honour of the volunteers, workers, caretakers and children at Le Phare.
As requested by Le Phare, this initiative is first and foremost a public awareness and solidarity campaign, not a fundraising campaign.
You (Member Pools) Can Help!
We’re cognizant that the summer season at your pools is already packed with so much fun; as such, our first consideration is to ensure that this campaign be as flexible, decentralized and simple to organize as possible. Our objective is to involve the greatest number of members from the West Island and NAA Community, without the weight of organizing complex activities.
We would like for member pools to find at least one 1-to-2-hour time slot, at any time during the season, when individuals can come and swim laps. These laps would count toward the collective Million Metres.
The time slot may, for example, be held during a swim team practice, or at a specific period during free swim. It can be during the week, or on the weekend; during the day or in the evening. You could even join it to an existing swim-o-thon that you are hosting, or have one before/after a meet.
Making the Campaign as Participatory as Possible
As part of this campaign, we would like, as much as possible, for these collective swimming sessions to be open to the general public—member or not. We hope that this initiative allows the greater community to discover our NAA pools, its spirit, while also help broaden our membership long-term.
How to Join the Initiative
We’re extremely grateful for any member pool wishing to join our collective campaign.
